Stone slate, and what it means in Saltaire
These are gritstone villages, and the roofs are stone slate: heavy, graded in diminishing courses so the biggest slabs sit at the eaves, and built on rafters sized for that weight. A lot of these streets sit inside conservation areas, which decides what is allowed back on before anyone talks about cost.
Stone slate does not fail the way tile does. It slips when the pegs and nails holding it give up, and the repair is finding matching reclaimed stone rather than ordering off a merchant shelf. That sourcing is the cost driver, and it is why no national price guide gets close on these houses.

Can I replace stone slate with something lighter?
Usually not, on two counts. In a conservation area the material is generally not your choice, and the rafters were sized for the weight of stone, so changing the covering changes how the whole roof behaves. Both get checked before anything is quoted.
How do I know if I need a repair or a whole new roof?
Age, spread and the state of the battens underneath. One slipped tile is a repair. Widespread slippage on a roof past fifty years old usually is not. I will tell you honestly which one you are looking at.
Do you do small jobs?
Yes, and they are most of what I do. A single tile, a bit of guttering, a chimney flaunching. The jobs bigger firms will not turn out for.
How much does a roof repair cost in Leeds?
